The Best Supplements for Seasonal Affective Disorder

As summer fades and winter approaches, the transition to shorter, darker, and colder days can be challenging. Many people find themselves dreading the extended winter months and the impact they can have on mood and energy. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a very common condition during this time. Fortunately, we have a few key supplements that will help support your mental well-being throughout the season.

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons, typically starting in the late fall and early winter and going away during the spring and summer. Symptoms include fatigue, general lack of interest, social withdrawal, trouble sleeping, weight shifts, and food cravings, particularly those high in carbohydrates and sugars.

We aren’t totally sure what causes SAD, however it’s believed that a vitamin D deficiency and a lack of sunlight keeps the hypothalamus, a part of the brain, from working properly. This messes with our circadian rhythms, leading to higher levels of melatonin (the hormone that makes us tired) and lower levels of serotonin (a feel good hormone). Serotonin affects many cognitive functions and behaviors including mood, decision-making, social behavior, impulsive behavior, and social decision-making. Low levels of serotonin are linked with depression.

Supplements to Help Ease Seasonal Affective Disorder

While exposure to natural light and lifestyle changes can be helpful, certain supplements can also play a crucial role in managing SAD. Below we’ll explore some of the most effective supplements that can help uplift your mood and support your overall well-being during the fall and winter months.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids (DHA/EPA)

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may be helpful in maintaining a healthy emotional balance. Out of the eleven omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA seem to be the most important for optimal brain health. EPA increases serotonin release from presynaptic neurons by reducing inflammatory signaling molecules in the brain that inhibit serotonin release. DHA also influences the action of various serotonin receptors by making them more accessible to serotonin by increasing cell membrane fluidity in postsynaptic neurons (3).

We recommend trying our EPA-DHA supplement, featuring 600 mg of potent EPA and 400mg of pure DHA per serving sourced from cold-water fish.

Vitamin D3

More than 70 percent of the population of the United States is deficient in vitamin D – yikes! Vitamin D levels influence immune function, mood and mental cognition, cardiovascular and so much more. Most importantly in this case, vitamin D regulates the conversion of the essential amino acid, tryptophan, into serotonin.

We recommend supplementing with our Vitamin D3 & K2 that delivers 1,000 IU of the preferred form of vitamin D.

The synergistic combination of these two powerful and optimized supplements can help prevent and/or rid symptoms of SAD, along with other cognitive function and behavior. Stock up on these powerful supplements to stop the winter blues in their tracks before they get you!

Magnesium

Magnesium is a vital mineral that plays a significant role in various bodily functions, including mood regulation and stress management. During periods of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), magnesium can be particularly beneficial as it helps support relaxation and reduce anxiety, which are often heightened during the fall and winter months.

Many people experience lower magnesium levels during these times, which can contribute to feelings of fatigue and low mood. Supplementing with magnesium, such as our Total Magnesium supplement, can help counteract these effects, improving overall mood and energy levels. For optimal results, aim for a daily intake of 200-400 mg of magnesium, preferably in a highly absorbable form such as magnesium citrate or glycinate.
