The Difference Between A Healthy And Unhealthy Diet: $1.50

The Difference Between A Healthy And Unhealthy Diet: $1.50

The difference between eating a healthy and unhealthy diet is only $1.50 per day, according to research by Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, cardiologist and epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health. He says that this is a relatively small difference that removes the financial reason for not buying healthier foods.

The biggest price differences showed in cuts of meat, with leaner cuts being pricier, while other food groups such as vegetables, grains and fruits were more affordable.

Josh Wachs, chief strategy officer for Share Our Strength, suggests some simple ways to reduce food costs and close the daily price gap. He recommends focusing on the cost per unit rather than the total cost, and buying, for example, a whole chicken and cutting it up instead of just buying chicken breast.
